"I had a wonderful relationship with my grandmother. She was outspoken, opinionated, very funny and wise. After she was done grieving my grandfather’s death she embraced her new freedom. In her 70ies she chose to fulfil her life long ambition to become an artist. Signed up for classes including life drawing, made a new circle of artist friends and left many colourful expressive paintings, drawings and water colours.
For all creative women waiting for their obligations to end so they can bloom. Celebrating the joy of creation after we are done with our womb work."
Yulia Badian 2026
Yulia Badian's contribution to the exhibition ‘The Freedom of Old Women’, an installation, combines themes and methods from her work and the materials she uses (found, crafted, reprocessed materials).
Yulia’s artistic works reinforce the belief that art is a liberating medium that helps us imagine a future free from the shackles of everyday life and the limitations of how we see and use materials. Questioning social norms – always with a playful wink.
mater-real-ized art from portugal
Born in 1967 in Vienna, now based in the South of Portugal, Yulia Badian transforms forgotten objects into meaningful art. Guided by her neurodiverse perspective and inspired by Arte Povera, her work reflects resilience, memory, and a deep connection to the landscape.
As a feminist and wild woman at heart, Yulia creates monumental, organic pieces that feel as though they’ve always belonged, celebrating the power of transformation and the endurance of the human spirit.
